Surfing - 70s Appendix 1

May 2nd, 2015

I think it's important to mention that my teen ages were during the 70s and at that period I was a surfer.

I started body surfing at age 9 in 1970 and at at 12 I tried my first surfboard.

The surfing lifestyle has a very unique aesthetic chained to it. Art is all around and the style was/is very unique too.
Nature, specially the sea related, plays a moajor role in art subjects that range from paintings and drawing to clothing and surfboard designing.

It was during that period that my art trainning set it's major foundation.

The 60s

April 29th, 2015

I was born in 1961 and my youth development occured during that decade.

It was a time when major turn points occured in western society.

Fashion with Mary Quant, Barbara Hulanicki, Paco Rabanne, Pierre Cardin e André Courrèges.
Jackie Kennedy made people change drastically the way they women looked and behaved.
The hippie way of life and looking was an impact coming against the status quo.
DC Comics and MArvel were born and Disney set its first footsteps towards being the major entertainment company that it is today
Cinema changed from a pasteurized look to a more natural way of composing images.
Andy Warhol and Pop Art were born.
The Beatles where a apex and influenced everything and a new psychedelic way of looking at things emerged.

Op Art, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Mod, Mao, Space Age, British Invasion, Provos, Counterculture, plastic, aeronautics, aerodynamics, aviation, Post Modernism.

Peter Cook, Ron Herron, David Greene, Michael Webb, Dennis Crompton e Warren Chalk.
Buckminster Fuller

In Brazil we had a military dictatorship and arts were used as a subliminary tool to say things.
we had things like:

Bossa Nova matured and Tropicalism was born.
Oscar Niemeyer
Cinema Novo

Adolf Franz Heep
Lina Bo Bardi

Ok, thats all I can put down for now.

Trajectory

April 28th, 2015

I think there is a, at least faint, suspicion that culture, memory, knowleage, language, inteligence and talent are somehow connected.

I decided to explore my past in order to investigate what influeneced my craft and, doing so, find more inspiration and improvement.

I was born in early 60s so that's where I'll be starting next post.

The Fate of the Artist

April 27th, 2015

We all want the fate of the movie stars. We want to shine outstansding from tha rabble... we want drowinning kisses thrown from the crowd.

Even tho we might get all that we are doomed to ever see the things that we didn't do on our artwork. It is there, it is finished, hanging on a museum wall and it lacks that special detail... a simple small solution we could not find when we were executing the piece... that brush stroke that would made all the difference to us and none to everyone else.

Sweet and sour is our life. Sometimes bitter, but hey!!! What a ride!!

Old Main Church in My Hometowm

April 26th, 2015

I have been told that once there was a beautiful church on the my hometown's main square.

Unfortunately, it's been destroyed by a nutty priest that decided it should be replaced by a bizzare example of modern early 70's architecture.

Well, thats the dark side of it. The official version says that the church was considered condamned, but I'm not sure if that isn't the convenient truth.

It is a shame.

Im trying to gather photos of the old church to make a painting. Hope it works because, from what I've seen, the church was really majestic.

note: so far, the only pics i got are partials.

The Artists Decision

April 26th, 2015

No matter what, where, or how much the artist has studied his labor.
No matter what type of media or tools the guy is using. Wheter it's a fork on a block of wax, a pencil on paper, a photographic composition, a computer program photo filter, or a stylus with a graphics tablet...

When and how to stop and consider that work finished (or forever unfinished!)

THAT CHOICE BELONGS TO THE ARTIST

that's what makes his work unique and, for that reason,

SHOULD ALWAYS BE CONSIDERED ART.

Art is not about the technique or the tools. It's about

EXPRESSING SOMETHING

So, unless there is no decision made, it is art.
